上世纪80年代末回荡在中国大街小巷，由黄浦生填词、邓洁仪演唱的《路灯下的小姑娘》：“在那盏路灯的下面，有一个小姑娘在哭泣……亲爱的，小妹妹，请你不要不要哭泣……”不就是这个旋律吗？其实邓洁仪是翻唱的。原曲也就是我们现在听到的这首歌，是一首在全世界都堪称传奇的歌曲，它是由成立于1983年的德国组合Modern Talking （摩登语录合唱团）演唱的《Brother Louie》，此曲1986年一经推出，很快荣登德国排行榜榜首，并横扫欧陆，迅即风靡全球，被誉为世界流行音乐史上最成功的歌曲之一。它曾被改编为50多种语言在200多个国家和地区广为传唱，其中仅中文就有两个版本：一个是林珊珊翻唱的粤语版《连锁反应》，另一个就是邓洁仪翻唱的国语版《路灯下的小姑娘》。
原唱Modern Talking是来自德国柏林的双人Pop组合Thmas Anders和Dieter Bohlen，他俩在20世纪80年代中后期红遍世界，留下了《Brother Louie》、《Atlantis is Calling》、《Cheri Cheri Lady,You’re My Heart》、《You’re My Soul 》等经典，其中，《Atlantis is Calling 》和 《You’re My Heart》, 《You’re My Soul 》都收录在了当年的热门碟《猛士》和《荷东》里。此后的两年中，Modern Talking凭着优雅的假声演唱和清新的舞曲节拍征服了整个世界，事业达到了顶峰。就在Modern Talking的声势如日中天时，两人竟因理念不合而在1987年时分道扬镳了，同年年底唱片公司推出两人解散后才出版的专辑《In The Garden Of Venus》。但如此的黄金组合怎能就此解散消失呢！两人在度过不是很成功的十年单飞后，终于又在1998年重新携手合作，推出重组后的首张精选大碟《Back For Good》，并创下全球销售一千万张的佳绩。2002年他俩又奉献了最新作品《Victory》（大获全胜），共收录了十五首快慢皆备的精彩作品。

Enigma源自于希腊文，它不是乐队名，也不是代称，而是一个Project，不是国名、不是人名，而是一个Studio Project 「谜」的首脑人物 麦可克力图（Michael Cretu）有着的完整古典学院派洗礼的经历(最高分毕业於德国法兰克福音乐学院，主修钢琴及作曲)是奠定他编曲功力的重要起点,让他懂得乐理，合声，对位，曲式等各种基础知识。 当他遇到相交15年以上的录音师友 詹斯葛德（Jens Gad）更将录音工程，取样(sampling)技巧及量身定作之工作室 (project studio)的概念，积渐纳入他的音乐思维与创作当中。「谜」的音符图腾，从麦可所使用的声音元素中，可感受其对於生命、人类、世界的尊重与性灵的升华。哲学性浓厚。

Enigma这支来自德国的乐队，或多或少你都应该有所耳闻。他们是早期准许引进大陆的国外音乐之 一。从1996年的美国亚特兰大奥运会宣传片的主题曲Return To Innocence（回到纯真）一定给大家留下 了不少深刻的印象。

最无论你在世界什么地方，都可能听过这样的声音：一种天生的美国式的圣歌，一种通过西方流行音乐节奏表现出来的遥远的非洲部落或严肃的宗教的回声。这就是谜的音乐。它的名字和风格都是那样令人鼓舞。并且难以置信地在世界范围内都得以广泛的流传。然而，很多时候，人们只是闻其声，却极少了解"谜"背后的故事。"谜"到底是个什么样的组合？

这位躲藏在"谜"背后的男人叫Michael Cretu,是个天才的音乐家和制作人。在过去的8年中，Cretu一直在西班牙的伊维萨特岛上过着与世隔绝的生活，但他却与合作者兼歌手Sandra(桑德拉，他的夫人)创造了一个流行音乐的新时代，在其他的商业性宣传中，你实在难以找出用英语、法语、拉丁语交融的格里利圣歌、超现实主义的笛声、女人的呼吸声、以及永远无法琢磨到的音源。到1997年为止，Enigma共出版了3张专集（不包括重新混音版本），每一张都是可点可圈的佳作，并且已成为德国流行音乐史上的瑰宝。所以尽管Cretu拒绝掌声和荣誉以及别人给"谜"下的风格上的定义，可是他已经没有什么理由可以抱怨的了······

Cretu于1857年5月18号出身在罗马尼亚的布加勒斯特。1965年，Cretu进入当地的一家音乐学校LYZEUM No. 2读书，它是一所专门培养年轻的音乐人才的学校，主修科目是钢琴。1968年，在巴黎学习了5个月的钢琴。1975年，Cretu和全家移民到原西德的(汉堡)Homburg，并考入法兰克福音乐学院。1978年毕业后开始在一家音乐室工作。在1979年他在Polygram（宝丽金）旗下出了自己的第一张专辑Moon,light and Flowers。Cretu的工作帮助了他1980年获得第一个奖项，这是他作为制作人职业的不错的成绩。1983年Cretu在Virgin旗下发行了专辑Legionare把他推向创造者和制作人的位置。他负责制作的Sandra(Cretu的夫人)第一首国际性单曲Maria Magdalena和另一张SOLO专辑Die Chinesische Mauer (The Chinese Wall)。随后出了一些专辑The Invisible Man 和Die Chinesische Mauer (The Chinese Wall)差不多，不过是英语的。1985年开始他作为一名制作人，同Moti Special、Tissy Theirs一起工作过。1987年通过Sylvie Vatan认识了Mike Oldfield，并协助Mike Oldfield制作了专辑Islands。在MikeOldfield的鼓励下，劝说Cretu少接触当制作人，而去从事音乐写作。

1988年2月7日，Michael Cretu同Sandra Lauer结婚，并且不久到IBIZA(地中海的一个小岛)生活，他们在那里有一个古老的农场和一个录音室（A.R.T. studios），Cretu在老房子的地下室建立了一个旅店，并且经常邀请朋友来做客，他在那里生活的很快乐。1989年，他开始在自己家庭录音室禁闭不出。他说："在完成Sandra专集成功后，我第一次有时间来做自己的音乐。"

"Enigma"的另外一个主角，Cretu的夫人Sandra，在所有"Enigma"的唱片中的女声演唱都是由她来完成。这一队夫妻搭档堪称流行音乐的典范。Sandra全名Sandra Lauer,1962年5月18日出生。12岁时，她就推出了个人单曲"Andy,Mein Frund"(安迪，我的朋友)。16岁时，她与2个女孩子组成了Arabesque（阿拉伯风格）演唱组，在当时的日本非常走红。1985年，Sandra开始了单飞生涯，在Virgin旗下推出了专辑"The Long Play"(漫长的演奏)。1987年出了她个人的第一张编辑版本专辑Ten On One，并开始与Cretu一起合作，美国和加拿大地区发行发行了Everlasting Love(永恒的爱)专辑。1988年她发行了下一个录音室专辑Into a Secret Land。1990年在"Enigma"推出首张专辑之前，她还推出了热门专辑Paintings in Yellow(黄色油画)。当时公司正在着手制作的《公元前2000年》中需要一个唱法文的女声。Virgin公司老板Richard Branson决定由Sandra来扮演这个角色，于是"Enigma"就诞生了。在这之后，Sandra在丈夫的协助下还出过3张专辑，但影响力明显不如"Enigma"。在Enigma成功后，她于1992年发行了Close to Seven，制作和写作都由Cretu来完成。后来，在这张专辑的基础上又出了编辑版本18 Greatest Hits.

从欧洲流行音乐中解脱出来，Cretu着手于自己最喜爱的音乐：概念性的，如Pink Floryd或YES乐队之类的。他说："我总是喜欢这样的音乐，但是我不再购买他们的唱片，因为我必须做出我自己的唱片。"

Cretu在他的音乐中用到了2中截然不同的并不时髦的取样声音--秘鲁风格的排萧和修道士唱的格里历圣歌旋律，而洒脱、懒散的DISCO节拍是他的独具匠心。这也是当时"Enigma"彻头彻尾地独创性中最吸引人的地方。

1990年10月，"谜"的首支单曲"Sadeness Part I"首先推出，这首歌成为他们最著名的热门单曲。紧接着推出的个人专辑MCMXC a.D(公元前2000年)成为德国有史以来卖的最好的专辑，一种销售了1200万张，在41个国家登上了专辑排行榜冠军，并且在美国排行榜200名中停留了5年之久。在90年代流行音乐稳步前进的时候，谁也没想到"Enigma"居然没有追随标准成功的流行规则，而是运用了笛子和中世纪的圣歌的咏唱和电吉它、铜管等现代乐器，传达着现代人的气息、情感和能量。

这张专辑中的经典歌曲"Mea Culpa"(我的过错)、"Principles Of Lust"（欲望的原则）、" The Rivers Of Belief"（信仰之河）都非常出色。另外一个非常值得赞扬的是 MCMXC a. D 采取了高超的录、混音技术。所有的音轨自然地相互流入，而立体声和低音的应用是完美的。将MCMXC a.D放在一个发烧音响系统中，释放出来的大量低音使人惊叹不止并为之痴迷。

在1991年的时候，MCMXC a.D推出一个限量版本，增加了4首曲目，不过都是在原来专辑歌曲的基础上重新相互混音乐并延长而成，所以这张唱片从开头到结尾都有一气呵成的感觉。限量版唱片的封面设计与原先几乎完全相同，但是用一种灰暗色的绿背景代替了原来的黑色。总的来说，MCMXC a.D(公元前2000年)是90年代流行音乐史上的一张杰作，它的音乐具有高度的独创性且一次次地营造了一种独一无二的氛围。到目前为止，这种声音和氛围只有被另一位艺术家成功地模仿并改进过，就是Delerium和他们的专辑Semantic Speaces，而大多数人尝试这样的音乐都失败了。2年后他开始为电影Sliver(银色)作电影原声碟。

The Cross of Changes共有9首歌曲，并且每首歌曲的开头都与上张专辑相似，只是在各种背景下出现了明显不同的男声。尽管这张专辑在销售数量上没有超过第一张，但还是取得了24张金唱片的好成绩，并在英国排行榜夺得冠军的位置，在澳洲和欧洲取得亚军的位置。

1996年11月25日，Virgin唱片公司首次在全球同步发行"谜"的最新专辑Le Roi Est Mort, ViveLe Roi!(这是德文，中文翻译是国王死了，国王万岁，台湾翻译改朝换代，英语是The King is Dead,Long Live the King!.)。第一首单曲便市Beyound the Invisible(冥界之外)。新专辑与以前相比不仅气氛有所不同，而且鼓的音色更加平和，出现了新的少数民族的声音---从祖鲁人到拉托维亚人，被评论界誉为肯定是目前为止"谜"最一元化的专辑。

在这张新专辑中传达了许多自然的、哲学的观念,这个观念的主题就是"为什么"。Beyound the Invisible是"Enigma"的一首经典的单曲。通过Cretu的声音铺垫着一种不可抵挡的圣歌迭句和有里的旋律。
2000年，Enigma再次推出The Screen Behind The Mirror(浮世镜)。
